A
couple of years after they graduated from the University
of California, Berkeley, Katherine Ribarich and Susan Exposito
started talking about career plans. “We wanted to
open a clothing store where you could sit on the sofa, drink
coffee and hang out with your girlfriends,” says Ribarich.
They rented a cozy shop in San Francisco—and bought
a sofa-but they couldn’t think of a good name. “Then
one day I phoned Susan and said, ‘Hey, girlfriend,’
and she said, ‘That’s it –that’s
what we’ll call our store!’”
Ribarich’s sister designed a colorful girlfriends
logo, and they printed them on promotional T-shirts that
they planned to give away at the store’s opening.
“But on our opening day, our first sale was to a woman
who bought 10 of those T-shirts for herself and all her
friends,” say Exposito, 31.
“We didn’t have to give them away- which told
us we were on to something.” Now the logo appears
on 25 girlfriends products- from mugs and sweatshirts to
caps, totes and water bottles- which are sold at the original
shop and a new branch in Portland, Oregon.
“We’ve both met some of our closest friends
through this store,” says Exposito.“Maybe it’s
the name.” -Glamour Magazine
